Read on to learn more about CWHC, what the Co-Director position actually looks like, and who might make a stellar candidate.

Organizational Background

CWHC’s work began 45+ years ago as a team of lay health workers offering radical reproductive and sexual health care, which was a direct response to the discrimination, disempowerment, and harm that women faced when seeking health care. Our mission has grown, our services have expanded, and our understanding about gender and gender expansiveness have evolved, but the essential core remains: we provide health care services with an approach that aims to keep care accessible and transform the health care experience into an affirming and empowering partnership with our clients.

 About the Co-Director Position

The Clinical Services Program is led by a pair of Co-Directors who work together to oversee services in primary care, trans health, reproductive and sexual health, alternative insemination, acupuncture, physical therapy, nutrition counseling and other complementary modalities. The clinical services team includes licensed providers, health workers, support staff and volunteers in complementary health areas. Our services are outpatient and we are a stand-alone, non-profit, values-based and mission-driven clinic. Our clinical services are complemented by the Counseling, Outreach and Education, and Integrative Health programs at CWHC.

While all aspects of overseeing the clinical services programming are shared by the Co-Director team, this position focuses on generating and developing initiatives and future work to evolve the program and respond to emerging needs internally and externally. Current plans and interests involve building the volume of our existing clinical services, expanding the scope of our trans health and integrative health services, and promoting our unique health care delivery model.

Another important aspect of this role is staying abreast of regulatory, legislative, and industry changes to the provision of health care and guiding CWHC to meet this ever-changing landscape. Additionally, this role is responsible for ensuring that quality control and safety measures are in place for staff and clients.

This position spends a good amount of time understanding the finances of the program, tracking income and expenses and forecasting budgets. This includes working with other staff to design strategies to improve our insurance billing or self-pay systems and ensuring that these systems align with our mission and values.

Candidate Qualities

We are looking for candidates who are familiar with the administrative operations of healthcare delivery and trends and best practices in the health care sector, and who can use that experience to continue to carve out space in the Chicago health care community for the unique and unparalleled work of CWHC.

This person needs to be able to see the big picture, understand the moving parts, and think creatively and strategically as well as translate visions and ideas into detailed, actionable plans. This person must be comfortable with public speaking, networking, and relationship-building with the healthcare sector and community partners.

Working within a modified collective governance structure is another critical and unique aspect of this position. Work at CWHC is structured to distribute power and responsibility across work teams. People in positions holding leadership titles are expected to follow our intentional practices and cultural norms around functions usually attributed to ‘management’ such as in the areas of supervision, decision-making and accountability. Willingness to engage in difficult conversations, interpersonal and conflict resolution skills are needed as well as a willingness to engage in personal and group reflections on power, privilege, and racial and social justice issues.

As an organization continuously working to center our values of self-determination, accessibility, and justice, we invite applicants from diverse backgrounds, communities and life experiences.
